Song Sparrow, Plastic Song

This was a real treat; while walking the property where I live I came upon a song sparrow singing in a thicket. While I watched and recorded, it proceeded to build up its song, quietly and tentatively, starting with just a three-note introduction, adding little bits and short phrases, taking them away, adding again, until it arrived at the complete, mature song which it then sang once with gusto and then flew away. Dark-eyed juncos twittered and clicked and occasionally a starling whistled in the trees above. The piece closes with a second sparrow’s song in the distance.
