Red-winged Blackbirds, Virginia Rail, Cattails

from Mystical Birdhouse by Brian Kenney

about

The Red-winged blackbird songs are familiar, musical, cacophonous, varied and altogether interesting and compelling. I could spend hours, days, weeks recording and notating the different patterns, rhythms and melodies that appear. While the blackbird’s song is reliable presence wherever there are cattails, the clickety-clack song of the Virginia rail is more elusive, but provides an enjoyable counterpart to blackbirds. Here I chose to add reflections from synthesizer and a field-recording of the wind for, oh I don’t know, drama?
