Howls to Great Horned Owls

from Mystical Birdhouse by Brian Kenney

/

about

Arriving home one night I heard a Great Horned Owl hooting some distance away. As I began recording and listening closely, I thought that it might be two owls but I wasn't sure. As the minutes went by I strained to hear other sounds in this quiet night. The distant yips and howls of coyotes were faint and definite but many other sounds went unnamed. Upon listening to the recording the next day the hoots clarified into two owls, one calling a bit faster and higher and in a more irregular pattern, the other softer, deeper, slower. Their calls often overlapped. An occasional rising screech indicating a possible juvenile bird punctuated the conversation. Making my own re-creation I chose to use a previous recording I made over the Summer exploring the howls of wolves from a dream I had as a child, rather than the coyotes that can be found on Whidbey Island (the field recording did not capture their sounds unfortunately). Accurately capturing the atmosphere of the moment is always challenging if not impossible; something new is always being created.
