Fox Sparrow, Deep Harvest Farm

Fox sparrows have lovely and quite variable songs of rich whistles that I rarely hear. I see them occasionally throughout the Winter and Spring, but never have heard them sing before they disappear to their breeding grounds in the Summer. I’m not sure if that reflects a habit of only singing on their breeding grounds or if I just haven’t noticed it. Anyway, this October (of 2021) I was lucky to hear and record two Fox sparrows singing in or near a hedgerow planted on the farm I work on, Deep Harvest Farm of Whidbey Island. I put this recording together quickly, with a short sequence of sparrow songs backed by an easy and amiable arrangement of bowed and plucked cello. It seemed a bit lazy to me, both in effort and effect, but then I thought perhaps that was just fine for the short, sweet and cheerful songs of these sparrows.
