Canada Goose, Spring Squabbles

from Mystical Birdhouse by Brian Kenney

/

about

In the big marsh at the Earth Sanctuary on Whidbey Island, I encountered the most incredible ruckus as two pairs of Canada Geese honked and splashed around in some kind of apparent confrontation. The volume and the intensity of the episode ebbed and flowed somewhat as the birds moved around each other and occasionally got in each others’ faces, but they kept up their chatter and their abrasive honking as they did so. Meanwhile, common yellowthroats sang, as if in commentary of the scene but perhaps just going about their own business. In the field recording I made it was difficult to keep track of the sound of the individual birds, and what sounded like a two part call might well have been two birds vocalizing in rhythm, accidentally or not, with each other. When I added some background texture, it ended up sounding somewhat mysterious and even ominous, which seems appropriate for this moment of posting (Halloween 2021), but the birds were originally seen and recorded on a sunny morning in April.
