American Wigeons, Deer Lagoon

from Mystical Birdhouse by Brian Kenney

/

about

American Wigeons are unusual for ducks in that they actually have what might be considered a song, rather than just a quack or grunt or single-note toot. Of course, who’s to say what a song can or can’t be? In the winter, hundreds if not thousands can be found congregating in open water or marshlands here on Whidbey Island, and sometimes the haphazard singing of a few individuals will rise and crest in a full chorus from most of the birds present. Here, the catlike call of a spotted towhee appears a few times, and synthesizers provide a 7-note refrain and slow melody accompaniment.
